Named after the mythical titan doomed to bear the heavens on his shoulders, the Atlas table's massive legs support the generous tabletop. The meeting and contrast between the legs and the table top is a key element of the design, with each element exaggerating the other, giving the table its unmistakable presence and brutalist appeal. For Atlas, John Astbury was inspired by various influences from architectural history. There are allusions to porticoes and colonnades, but Atlas is mainly based on the archetypal post and lintel construction. In combination with the simple geometry, the circle and the square, these are the primary archetypes that make up the character and composition of the table.
